West Virginia known for strict enforcement of speed limits

According to a set of statistics, West Virginia has a relatively strict approach when dealing with drivers who choose to travel too fast on this state's roads. West Virginia tied with a nearby state for the ninth strictest state overall.

Looking at the report more closely, however, it seems that West Virginia's reputation for being strict can be attributed primarily to the fact that the state will not hesitate to enforce reckless driving penalties, which can include criminal sanctions like jail, for those who are driving well over the speed limit.

With respect to pulling people over for a more run-of-the-mill speeding ticket, West Virginia actually is somewhat lax, ranking 36th in terms of speeding enforcement.

Enforcing speeding really is a matter of safety. According to the statistics, as of 2016, speeding played a role in over 25 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities. Moreover, in terms of dollars, fatal accidents on the road that are caused by speeding cost over $40 billion in terms of lost life, injuries and the like.

However, it is important to remember that law enforcement efforts cannot stop all speeding and, perhaps more importantly, might not be able to give victims all of the justice they deserve. In particular, criminal enforcement generally will not put money in the pockets of injured victims or, for that matter, the families of deceased victims.

In order to get full compensation for their losses, it may be necessary for the family of a victim who died in a speeding-related crash to file a civil wrongful death suit. To do so, it may be important to get appropriate legal assistance.
