Another pedestrian accident around WVU; student critically hurt

A student at West Virginia University who was crossing the street in daylight was in critical condition after a pickup truck hit her. According to reports, the student was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident.

This most recent incident comes on the heels of a fatal accident earlier in February. In that accident, another student, also in a crosswalk, was struck by a motorist who has yet to be identified. The woman eventually died from her injuries after being taken to the hospital.

In this incident, bystanders who saw the accident provided emergency aid to the woman, who was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. According to the most recent report, her condition remained critical.

Police are still investigating the cause of both of these accidents and have yet to issue any citations. Authorities did caution motorists to be careful around crosswalks, particularly when traffic signals are in the process of changing. They also reminded pedestrians to pay attention to where they are going and avoid being on one's cell phone while walking in traffic.

The University is also in the process of evaluating how to make its campuses safer for pedestrians after these two incidents. There has been talk of stepping up law enforcement efforts near crosswalks.

In the meantime, one West Virginia is likely hoping and praying that their loved one will pull through after her accident. Even if she does, her injuries could cost thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical care, lost income and other damages. Another family is grieving the loss of their loved one, and they too likely have a way to go with respect to rebuilding their lives both financially and otherwise.

These families do have legal options available to them, and these options would include filing a personal injury action or, in the case of the student who died, a wrongful death lawsuit.
