Car accidents take huge economic toll on W. Virginians

Most people understand that motor vehicles are an important means of transportation but that they come with some risks. However, many West Virginians are probably not aware of the enormous economic costs of motor vehicle accidents.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, car accidents and crashes involving other motor vehicles cost West Virginia hundreds of millions of dollars each year. While people often understand the high costs of medical expenses following an accident, they may not think about the lost wages that result from people suffering injuries or even death in accidents. In fact, the majority of economic damages from car accidents are in the form of lost wages.

The tremendous costs of motor vehicle accidents should alert drivers and passengers to a few points. First, the costs should be a reminder to drivers that they must always put safety first while on the roadways. All drivers have an obligation to operate their vehicles in a manner that does not cause an unreasonable risk of harm to others.

Another important point about the high costs of car accidents is that victims of a negligent driver must be sure that they account for all of their accident-related damages before agreeing on a settlement figure. In some cases, victims or their families may opt for a quick settlement, but the amount may not be sufficient to cover all of a victim's damages, like lost wages.

All drivers in West Virginia should do their part so that they don't become just another statistic. In addition, anyone who suffers from damages related to an accident that someone else caused should be aware of how they can get all of the compensation that they deserve.
