Questions raised over safety of anticoagulant drug Xarelto

Xarelto is a new blood thinning drug that is used for a certain type of heart condition, but has been linked to serious hemorrhaging.

There are many new drugs on the market today that seem to work miracles in helping people recover from an illness or managing the symptoms of a chronic condition. Unfortunately, some of these drugs are not as miraculous as they initially seemed. This is proving to be true for some types of anticoagulants. These drugs have been prescribed to countless patients in West Virginia as well as across the country, and have reportedly resulted in numerous serious and sometimes fatal adverse reactions.

One of these drugs, Xarelto, is a blood-thinning medication that is often prescribed to patients with a type of irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation, or to patients recovering from hip or knee replacement procedures, according to Web MD. The drug is meant to prevent stroke and other life-threatening complications resulting from blood clots. Unfortunately, the more serious side effects of Xarelto include hemorrhaging and severe allergic reactions. For those who have allegedly lost a loved one to this new drug, it can seem to do more harm than good.

Unpredicted reactions to Xarelto use

According to the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices, Xarelto was listed as one of the top ten drugs that were suspected to cause serious or deadly adverse effects in 2012. Other implications related to the drug include:

  • Annual hospitalizations or emergency room visits numbering in the thousands
  • No recommended changes by the Federal Drug Administration or the manufacturer regarding dosage or monitoring, particularly in older patients, to prevent deadly hemorrhages
  • No antidote to quickly reverse the anticoagulant agents in the drug in an emergency

There have been numerous cases pointing to Xarelto as the cause of serious injuries or wrongful death, according to Medical Daily. One of these includes a lawsuit from a woman who says her aunt suffered a fatal hemorrhage after being prescribed Xarelto. According to her case, the company failed to properly notify the public of the dangers associated with the medication.

However, drug manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies have a responsibility to inform those who will potentially take the medicine of its possible risks and side effects.
